About the Job
\Research Description
The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications for a
post-doctoral fellow in the field of multi-messenger astronomy with
Prof. Michael Coughlin. The appointment start date is September 1,
2024, with some flexibility. The appointment is for one year, with
possibility of annual renewals up to 3 years. The research would
focus on searches for gravitational waves with the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), as well as
optical counterparts with the Zwicky Transient Facility, a
time-domain optical survey to study the transient night sky
photometrically. Specifically, we are seeking those interested in
work on machine learning, participating in our analysis of
ground-based telescope and gravitational-wave data to study
multi-messenger, transient objects by building machine learning
pipelines in coordination with frontend Javascript/ interfaces.
This work is in the context of the National Science Foundation's
Accelerated AI Algorithms for Data-Driven Discovery (A3D3)
Institute, a multi-disciplinary and geographically distributed
entity with the primary mission to lead a paradigm shift in the
application of real-time artificial intelligence (AI) at scale to
advance scientific knowledge and accelerate discovery. The
Institute team reflects a collaborative effort of Principal
Investigators from Caltech, Duke University, MIT, Purdue
University, UC San Diego, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, University of Minnesota, University of
Washington, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Successful
participation in these projects will involve collaboration with
science teams in gravitational-wave and optical time-domain
physics, as well as with research partners in computer science,
electrical and computer engineering, and mathematics. Post-
baccalaureate scholars will build strong portfolios of work
demonstrating capabilities in AI and data science for large scale
physics projects.
