Our 107,000 colleagues serve people in more than 160 countries. - Senior Corrosion Scientist/Engineer -- Electrophysiology Division -(St. Paul, MN - Woodridge) Leading an active lifestyle is important to the many people we serve. In Abbott's Electrophysiology (EP) division, we're advancing the treatment of heart and vascular disease through breakthrough medical technologies, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives. - As Senior Scientist/Engineer, you will be part of the Materials group in our Science and Technology team focused on delivering the future in medical devices. - The Corrosion Scientist/Engineer will provide scientific expertise throughout the development and execution of corrosion test strategies for medical device products, including but not limited to:

  • Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization testing
  • Cyclic voltammetry
  • Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy.Responsibilities:
    • Analyze test results and draft technical reports, consult on technical and regulatory strategy and draft technical justifications where testing is deemed to be unnecessary.
    • Perform materials assessments and support medical device project teams with submission activities.
    • Partner with R&D peers and project teams, define test plans and lead problem solving initiatives.
    • Work in a dynamic team environment and have strong interpersonal skills.
    • Conduct hands-on failure analysis, electrochemical testing and other laboratory testing.
    • Document experiments in a highly regulated environment
    • Knowledge of technical concepts and principles underlying Materials Science techniques.Requirements:
      • Bachelor's degree required. - Degree in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or related degree/discipline.
      • 5+ years of related work experience and/or advanced education in materials science and engineering and/or electrochemistry with focus on corrosion science.
      • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
      • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.
      • Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines in timely manner.
      • Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail.Preferred:
        • Advanced degree preferred - may substitute for 3 years of experience.
        • Experience in Medical device products is highly preferred.
        • 10 or more years of experience and/or education in material science and engineering, biomaterials (such as nitinol, stainless steel, titanium, carbon, and others) and their interactions with biological systems.
        • Knowledge and technical expertise in testing techniques in materials science:
          • Corrosion assessment
            • Substantial knowledge about industry standards for corrosion assessment, such as ASTM F2129
            • Surface analysis
              • Microscopy
              • SEM/ESEM/EDS/WDS
              • Failure analysis
                • Metals/composites
                • Microscopy (optical, electron, confocal laser)
                • Spectroscopy (EDS/FTIR/Raman)
                • Metallography (embed, x-section-polish, etch, grain structure/size)
                • Fractography
                • Substantial knowledge and technical expertise in materials used in medical devices, focused on metallic materials. This includes providing consultation and support to project teams to help meet their objectives.
                  • Substantial understanding of metallic materials (and associated industry standards) used in biomedical applications such as CoCr alloys, titanium alloys, nickel alloys and stainless steels.
                  • Specialized knowledge of corrosion science with a strong background in electrochemical techniques.
                  • Ability to strategize with testing when justifications are not appropriate.
