The Controls Systems Engineer role is a high-profile position with overall technical responsibility for developing high quality products in our Commercial HVAC controls team. This person will be a member of a new product development (NPD) core team, overseeing one or more projects. This role is at the heart of our sustainability efforts as an organization working to design controls to make solutions to improve building and energy performance for our commercial customers.  This role will also have high visibility to each part of our organization allowing someone a lot of room to grow and develop into future leadership opportunities. 

This role will demonstrate a thorough understanding of systems thinking applied to product development, including a broad working knowledge of electrical engineering, embedded microcontrollers, firmware, software, reliability testing, verification, validation, and production. They will work with other Systems Engineers and Architects to define high level architectures and system interfaces for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control systems and applications. In addition, they must effectively communicate technical direction to senior management and across functional teams that span all engineering disciplines, as well as, product management, sales, quality, supply chain, and operations.


  • Overall technical responsibility for a project.
  • Defines system solutions and requirements based on customer requirements, technical tradeoffs (cost vs. function vs. time-to-market vs. quality), manufacturing service requirements.
  • Identifies optimal interfaces among system components, budgeting of common (shared) system-level requirements and can manage these interfaces and budgets dynamically and effectively.
  • Evaluates trade-offs between possible approaches and turns them into strategies that guide design and implementation by development teams.
  • Designs key cross-product software components and component interfaces, mainly in the areas of frameworks, infrastructure, and communications.


  • Bachelor’s Degree Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of electrical/software controls product development experience, embedded experience preferred
  • Experience with a variety of communications protocols required, BACnet, Modbus, and LonTalk preferred.
  • Software lifecycle management tool experience required.
  • Experience mentoring development teams in the design of new product development projects required experience collaborating and developing remotely distributed teams preferred.
  • HVAC controls and systems industry experience preferred.
  • Product and/or system architecture experience preferred.
  • Electrical hardware design experience is a plus.
  • Project Management experience is a plus
