About the Job
Position Responsibilities
We are looking for a highly skilled, self motivated, Linux systems
engineer who is capable of independently leading and executing
small to mid-scale Linux operations and engineering projects. The
incumbent will be responsible for a mix of day-to-day operations
support, year-to-year operations upkeep routines (i.e. upgrading
servers), and adoptions and/or development of new technology
solutions for the growing needs of the Minnesota High Performance
Research Cyberinfrastructure Community.
Systems Operations (30%)
* Identify, remediate, and resolve day-to-day infrastructure
operations demands
* Develop, test, and maintain systems configurations with
Puppet
* Provide escalation support for complex end user issues
* Participate in 7-day 24x7 on call rotations with operations
peers
Systems Engineering (60%)
* Prioritize, plan, and scope tasks, assignments, and projects with
minimal supervision
* Plan and execute small to mid-scale projects, lead related
working groups
* Identify opportunities for new automations, and improvements to
existing automations
Other Activities (10%)
* Participate in the University of Minnesota technical communities
and working groups
* Participate in applicable professional organizations and
conferences
* Independent studies, training, and workshops
* Independent technology research, investigation, and
development

On-call responsibilities require an on-site presence at the
University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus within 1 hour when
necessitated by an on-call incident.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
* BA/BS degree with at least 4 years of work experience in Linux
Systems Administration, or Masters degree with at least 2 years of
work experience in Linux Systems Administration.
* Expert in day to day Linux systems operations, troubleshooting,
and administration
* Excellent oral and written communication and leadership
skills
* Able to work independently with periodic guidance
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with experience in any one or more of the following may
be given consideration preference:
* Linux HPC or research computing environment experience
* Excellent communication skills with non-technical research
oriented peers and end-users
* Experience in a CI/CD driven, peer-reviewed, systems change
management environment
* On-Prem Linux systems configuration management (Puppet, Ansible,
SALT, Chef, etc.)
* Systems scripting and/or programming (BASH, Python, Ruby,
etc.)
* Networked POSIX and/or object storage administration (SAN, NAS,
CEPH, etc.)
* Managing on-prem virtualization platforms (OpenStack, VMware,
KVM, oVirt, etc)
* Designing and leading small to midsize projects and working
groups

About MSIThe Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) is a core
research facility of the University of Minnesota (UofM), part of
the Research Computing umbrella within the Research and Innovation
Office. MSI provides on-premises, advanced, Top 500 research
computing infrastructure and expertise to the University's research
and scholarly community, and the State of Minnesota, in order to
advance and accelerate research and foster innovation and
discoveries through advanced computing technologies, scientific
computing and informatics, application development, and services.
The Institute currently supports over 800 research groups with over
5500 users spanning more than 40 academic disciplines including the
sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social
sciences.About ASOThe Advanced System Operations group (ASO) is a
group of highly skilled, self-motivated technologists who are
passionate about high performance systems technology, and applying
it to the unique demands of resource intensive research computing.
ASO is responsible for developing and managing the infrastructure
components of the supercomputing institute, including:
* On prem Top 500 Linux HPC Supercomputer clusters
* 20PB+ of on-prem, high performance, POSIX and Object storage
* Physical and virtual supporting infrastructure and research
services
* Researcher data ingest and processing portals, and interactive
research services
Members of ASO: Work with cutting edge technologies and platforms,
deliver high performance solutions to the University research
community, balance usability needs with maintaining system security
and stability, directly assist external and internal research
entities, and develop novel high performance solutions to HPC scale
operational challenges.
