Basic Function To provide direct nursing care to patients of the Ramsey Nursing Home or the Detoxification Center; to observe and report the physical condition of patients; to assist in the collection and recording of data for patient assessment forms; and to perform related duties as assigned. The current vacancies are at the Ramsey County Care Center. The eligibility list created by these vacancies may be used to fill other vacancies in the department or County.   • Provide direct nursing care to patients by performing measures such as ambulating, range of motion, maintaining and monitoring intravenous therapy under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and performing emergency measures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Monitor patient condition by documenting vital signs, observing monitoring equipment, taking blood pressure, noting intake and output, observing patient behavior and asking them questions.
  • Provide physical comfort to patients through bathing, positioning, massage, administering pain medication as ordered by the physician, providing bedpans, and assisting with meals.
  • Administer prescribed treatments such as wound, catheter, tracheotomy, colostomy, ileostomy and gastrostomy care.
  • Assist in the assessment of nursing needs of patients by collecting and recording data on Minimum Data Sheets (MDS) in order to identify problems, symptoms, and physical, behavioral and psychological changes.
  • Aid in evaluating nursing care provided by documenting and relaying information about noteworthy (positive or negative) staff performance.
  • Assist Registered Nurses in the development and writing of nursing care plans.
  • Write nursing orders under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Assist physicians with diagnostic procedures such as x-rays and laboratory tests, by positioning patients and explaining procedures.
  • Make immediate decisions in emergencies, summoning assistance as needed.
  • Assist in educating patients about ordered tests, procedures and medications.
  • Facilitate resourceful utilization of health care services, equipment and supplies, and identifies problems suitable for referral to the patient representative.
  • From time to time to work mandated overtime to ensure adequate staffing coverage and maintenance of the safety for residents at all times. (The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.) ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. Minimum Qualifications Education: Completion of a practical nursing program approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Experience:None. Substitution: None. Certifications/Licensure: Currently licensed as a practical nurse by the State of Minnesota, or have a permit to practice practical nursing authorized by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Applicants who qualify based on a permit are subject to the limitations prescribed by the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Exam/Screening Process Information The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:
    • Training and Experience Rating = 100% The examination for the Licensed Practical Nurse title will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions - do not mark "see resume" or "see work history" as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination. Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Licensed Practical Nurse. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 2 months or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list. The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list. Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application. Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment. In addition, you may be subject to one or more of the following:
      • Department of Human Services (DHS) Background Check E-Verify Participation: Ramsey County participates in the federal E-Verify program. This means that Ramsey County will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. If the Government cannot confirm that you are authorized to work, Ramsey County is required to give you written instructions and an opportunity to contact DHS and/or the SSA before taking adverse action against you, including terminating your employment.
