OverviewPNNLs Buildings Systems Group performs applied research
to enhance the energy and water efficiency, occupant productivity,
and resilient operation of buildings and their connected energy and
water systems. Our core research capabilities span building
performance evaluation, building control system optimization,
building technology measurement, validation, and demonstration, and
site-level assessment and planning for energy and water resilience.
We work closely with over 300 subject matter experts across the
broader Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Division to support
the Nations transition to a sustainable, efficient, resilient, and
secure energy and water systems through innovation and actionable
solutions.We are seeking an experienced engineer/scientist with a
background in building water management to conduct research and
provide technical support in the areas of building water management
and resilience including system performance evaluation, technology
testing and demonstration, tool development, policy development,
and training for federal and commercial facilities. The successful
candidate will use their technical expertise and apply science and
engineering principles and theories to:
- Develop new assessment methods for building water and
infrastructure systems
- Analyze building performance for efficiency and resilience
- Test/demonstrate new technologies
- Support the development of federal policy
- Provide technical assistance to federal agencies in the areas
of water management and resilienceResponsibilitiesThe successful
candidate will be responsible for:
- Project and/or task Managers for performing assigned roles,
following applicable project and field procedures, and performing
assigned tasks on time and within budget;
- The Building Systems Group Leader, and Building Sustainability
Team Leader, for staff development, performance evaluation, and
operational discipline (e.g., safe operations)The successful
candidate will have building specialization in at least one science
or engineering domain and will have the ability to select and
develop technical approaches to complex problems with occasional
oversight.The individual will serve as a Principal investigator
(PI) or co-PI on projects or tasks, integrating work of team
members. The individual will lead development of technical
products, generate new ideas for and contribute to technical
content for small to medium proposals, support scoping, scheduling,
and budgeting for major tasks, demonstrate ability to acquire
funding for self and task level teams, serve as a role model for
quality, safety, and security, mentor junior staff, and establish
roles in professional communities.QualificationsMinimum
Qualifications:
- BS/BA with 5 years of experience
- MS/MA with 3 years of experience
- PhD with 1 year of experiencePreferred Qualifications:
- Candidates are encouraged to apply to this position even if

- Graduate degree in civil/environmental engineering, buildings
sciences, water resources, environmental science, or related
field
- Experience in federal water management with knowledge of
federal water requirements
- Experience in water management at the building or campus level
including conducting comprehensive evaluations to recommend
efficiency and resilience solutions
- Practical experience analyzing building- or campus-scale water
systems, including design, commissioning, operations and
maintenance, or auditing
- Knowledge of water systems and related infrastructure including
an understanding of system design and hydraulic modeling
- Experience setting up experimental research and technology
demonstrations
- Basic programming skills for data analysis (e.g. Python,
R)
- A collaborative approach to problem-solving and the ability to
work well with geographically distributed and interdisciplinary
teams
- Demonstrated ability to write concisely and clearly. A
technical writing sample is required
- A passion for learning and innovation to advance energy and
