About this role
The Sr. Manager, Engineering is an integral position within the
Det-Tronics team in supporting our short and long term technical
roadmap. This position will lead a technical team responsible for
the design development of new high-quality Fire and Gas detection
products at Det-Tronics, researching and developing new
technologies, and sustaining the entire portfolio of existing
products by utilizing company policies, procedures, and tools. A
significant and important aspect of the role is the people
leadership responsibilities that include providing transformational
leadership for a high performing group of technical engineers and
supporting them in their career or skill development.. As part of
the engineering leadership team, this role requires input and
participation in technology, product and business strategic
planning. The position is a mix of strategic development but
requires someone who is also hands-on with direct involvement in
the oversight of projects and programs, application of technical
expertise, participation in reviews, and support to project and
program managers in planning and executing projects to budgets and
schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
Apply knowledge of product lifecycle management to effectively
drive and guide engineering team through phases of product
development and sustainability with high quality and predictability
of timeline and budget.
Execute product portfolio roadmap with a design and development
engineering team over the lifecycle of each product for both
continuation / sustaining engineering and new product launches.
Manage and align the design and development team to company
priorities, goals and strategies while providing input on project
planning, defining scope of work, and defining engineering staffing
requirements.
Participate and represent the design and development group in
cross-functional management teams by interfacing and communicating
regularly with test, approvals, manufacturing, product management,
program management, field service, marketing, supply chain, and
procurement functional areas.
Utilize solid understanding of theories and practices of a variety
of disciplines including in electrical, mechanical and
software/firmware to directly support the management of complex
projects within boundaries of quality, time and budget.
Recruit talented employees, participate in workforce and
development planning efforts, establish clear expectations, and
effectively manage performance. Provide training, coaching and
oversight and drive employee engagement.
Provide leadership to the staff regarding work priorities and
project execution.
Ensure staff deliverables complies with regulatory requirements,
industry standards, company policies and procedures, processes,
proper and good documentation practices, and task assignments.
Adhere to quality system design control procedures, regulations and
standards and ensure appropriate design controls are being applied
to during sustaining engineering efforts and new product
developments.
Lead and assist in the continued development and improvement of
overall engineering department policies and procedures.
Hands-on participate in the development of project and product
documentation and their approvals (e.g. project requirements,
engineering change orders, etc.).
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in in an engineering discipline preferably
mechanical, electrical, software or computer science.
7+ years of experience in engineering and/or product
development
5+ years as people manager
Preferred Qualifications:
Must be well versed in design development, verification,
validation, and manufacturing processes. Strong knowledge and
experience with electromechanical products including
software/firmware.
Must have led a team for an electromechanical product development
from inception through successful market launch. Platformed product
development desired.
Must have product development experience in a regulated
industry.
Have experience developing and implementing new processes that
improve engineering or product development outcomes.
Ability to influence and collaborate with senior management and
work across all levels of the organization
An executive presence with polished and well-developed
facilitation, written and oral communication skills, demonstrating
creativity and technical expertise
Assertive and confident with a strong point of view while able to
understand/empathize and support other perspectives. Intent on
building trusting and collaborative partnerships/relationships
Demonstrated aptitude in leveraging human-centered design
principles to deliver customer-focused products and solutions
Strong business acumen, including a solid understanding of
financial analysis methods
Demonstrated strong writing skills for documenting work, and strong
communication skills with experience communicating up to
leadership.
Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects
at a given time and changing priorities.
Technically savvy and skilled in root-cause-analysis and leading
the resolution of complex engineering challenges.
Motivational leader with demonstrated experience developing
engineers at different career levels.
Experience in collaboration tools such as those from Atlassian,
electrical and mechanical design tools, and document control tools.
Expert level user of standard office tools including Microsoft
products: Word, Excel, Powerpoint and MSProject.
