TRIO Upward Bound is seeking an educator to instruct a supplemental course for our afterschool, college preparation program targeting high school age students from Minneapolis. We are looking for an instructor for the following course (January-May):

  • Science Exploration & Study Skills for 9th grade students. This class meets every Wednesday. Instructor must be available from 3-6pm as well as additional office prep hours on campus with the TA.Hours: Part-time; Wednesdays from 3:00-6:00pm; 8 hours per week (includes prep)
    Hourly rate: $21.00 per hour

    Qualifications





    Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelors degree
    • Classroom teaching and management experience (1-2 years)
    • Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting)
    • Must pass criminal background check
    • Available for the duration of the Minneapolis Public School year calendar (mid-January to early May)Preferred Qualifications:
      • Knowledge in a variety of sciences
      • Experience teaching Science and/or Study Skills
      • Experience working w/ English Language Learners (ELL)
      • Experience working w/ high school aged youth (can be outside of the classroom)
      • Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
      • Experience w/ direct classroom instruction
      • Strong classroom management skills
      • Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
      • Experience working with low-income, first generation students
      • Experience supervising teaching assistants
      • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
      • Experience teaching Science and/or Study Skills
      • Experience working w/ English Language Learners (ELL)
      • Experience working w/ high school aged youth (can be outside of the classroom)
      • Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
      • Experience w/ direct classroom instruction
      • Strong classroom management skills
      • Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
      • Experience working with low-income, first generation students
      • Experience supervising teaching assistants
      • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
      • Willingness and flexibility to fulfill other tasks assigned to further TRIO Upward Bound program goals.
      • Candidates who have overcome and/or experience similar socio-economic backgrounds to TRIO Upward Bound student population including low income, first generation (to go to college) will receive priority consideration.

        Program Overview:TRIO Upward Bound (TRIO UB) is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education (USDE) equal educational opportunity program. TRIO UB is a college preparatory program for high school students who come from low-income and are working to be the first person in their family who attends college. TRIO UB works with students, parents, schools and communities, on a long-term and intensive basis to help generate both individual and systemic change. Services are designed to help participants build the skills needed to succeed in postsecondary education. TRIO Upward Bound annually serves 118 Minneapolis Public High School students; this federal grant project has received continuous funding since 1966.Program Objectives:
        • To improve students' academic skills through intensive classroom instruction
        • To further students' academic, personal, social, and cultural development
        • To provide educational opportunities not usually available to low-income youth from diverse, urban backgrounds representing varied cultural and ethnic backgrounds,
        • To motivate students to graduate from high school, matriculate to, and graduate from postsecondary education
