Position Overview:The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) is the largest college at the University of Minnesota. Our Fiscal Administration Office (financial cluster) is the center of payroll and accounting operations, and resource management operations for the College. We support 35 academic departments, centers and administrative units. Our financial cluster is comprised of four teams each lead by a Finance Manager with a total of 14-Accountants, 6-Executive Accounts Specialists, and 2-Principal Accounts Specialists. Our workgroup coordinates accounting and payroll practices, budget planning and business procedures throughout the College, and is responsible for disseminating, implementing, and monitoring University of Minnesota and CLA budget policies and procedures in all CLA units.The annual salary range for this position is currently between $56,000 and $66,000 depending on qualifications. Much of this position may be performed remotely while specific tasks and some meetings will require on-campus presence. Job Responsibilities:(80%) Financial Administration
* Develop financial models and analyze business activities; identify and develop new processes to improve business practices and procedures.
* Generate monthly financial reports, including projections; assist with report interpretation, identify trends, and craft solutions; identify potential deficits and work with stakeholders to resolve.
* Review and approve all purchases and payroll transactions on sponsored and non-sponsored accounts for policy compliance and budgetary impact.
* Initiate, process, and approve financial transactions for efficient and timely account management.
* Reconcile accounts and analyze monthly financial results for reasonableness.
* Meet on a regular basis with administrators, chairs, directors, faculty, principal investigators, and other staff to review financial status; initiate planning; provide guidance; and problem solve.
* Work with unit administration to communicate changes to University and CLA financial policy and procedure.
* Communicate and coordinate with college financial administration as necessary.
* Assist with sponsored project budget development; monitor grant expenditures for sponsor and University compliance; work with SPA and SFR to invoice and report on sponsored activity meeting all contractual obligations.
* Administer accounts receivable work including ESOs and ISOs, foundation transfers, and external and internal customer billing.
* Work with unit administration on annual budget preparation, entry, and close out.
* Serve as financial and human resources systems resource.

(10%) Payroll/HRMS Administration
* Provide oversight for the payroll document process.
* Serve as effort coordinator for the assigned units.
* Resolve issues and coordinate solutions with the unit, HR, Payroll and CLA.

(10%) Other Assigned Duties
* Act as a backup on the team for fellow team members.
* Serve on various team or collegiate committees, special assignments, etc.
* Special projects as assigned.

Qualifications





Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, and at least two (2) years of professional accounting experience, or a combination of related education and/or relevant professional accounting experience totaling (6) six years.
  • Demonstrated experience managing finances to include: forecasting, robust analysis, budgeting and complex reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience with computerized accounting, payroll, and reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.- NOTE: Training and demonstrated proficiency required for access to university financial, payroll, and human resource systems.

    - Physical requirements include keyboarding; grasping; talking; hearing; seeing; repetitive motions; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The work is primarily sedentary which involves sitting much of the time, however, frequently walking to meetings that are held in various buildings throughout the East and West banks of campus will be necessary.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Demonstrated experience communicating clearly and effectively to faculty; unit leaders; staff; students; central business units; governmental organizations; and private businesses both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate professionally in conflict situations.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
    • Highly organized and detailed oriented; capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadline objectives.
    • Demonstrated self-starter able to work independently in a dynamic team environment that requires flexibility, resourcefulness, and exceptional problem-solving skills.
    • Experience working in a higher education environment.
    • Experience with fund accounting or managing finances for units with diverse funding sources.
    • Grant management and grant accounting experience.
    • Knowledge of University of Minnesota policies and procedures.
    • Experience utilizing PeopleSoft (EFS/HRMS).
    • Experience utilizing University's Effort Certification system (ECRT).
    • Experience working in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota
